I chose Kurt Cobain, Any Winehouse, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix for my painting because they were the stars of my day; their music was the soundtrack to my life (I didn’t appreciate Amy Winehouse and her brilliant voice until after she passed, My Bad).
James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was a rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century, just watch Hendrix play The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock to see why or try and listen to All Along The Watchtower just once (bet you can’t).
Hendrix Dead at 27
Jimi Hendrix was a tortured soul and a long time recreational drug user, those who knew Jimi have come up with dozens of explanations as to what happened the night of September 18, 1970. Accident, suicide, or murder-how did Jimi Hendrix die?
What is know is that after spending the night at a party with friends he was met by his girlfriend, who planned to take him home. They arrived at her apartment in Notting Hill, where they spent the rest of the evening together. He had enjoyed quite a bit of red wine the night before his death, and in addition to what he had had to drink, the rock star took some of his girlfriend’s sleeping pills.
Vesperax was a brand with which Hendrix was apparently familiar, but he took far more than the prescribed dose that night-nine full tablets, nearly twenty times the amount that would normally be prescribed by a doctor.
The next day, his girlfriend woke up to buy a pack of cigarettes, and when she returned sometime around 10:00 am, she found him unresponsive and covered in vomit. She called an old friend of Jimi’s who told her to call an ambulance. Hendrix was found dead at the scene, and the autopsy concluded that he died of asphyxiation sometime shortly after midnight.
James Douglas “Jim” Morrison was and a singer, songwriter and poet, best remembered as the lead vocalist of The Doors. Due to his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, wild personality, performances, and the dramatic circumstances surrounding his life and early death, he is regarded by critics and fans as one of the most iconic and influential front men in rock history. Since his death, his fame has endured as one of popular culture’s most rebellious and oft-displayed icons, representing the generation gap and youth counterculture.
Morrison co-founded the Doors during the summer of 1965 in California; the band spent two years in obscurity until shooting to prominence with their #1 single in the United States “Light My Fire”
Morrison recorded a total of six studio albums with the Doors, all of which sold well andreceived critical acclaim.
Morrison Dead at 27
Jim Morrison developed an alcohol dependency during the 1960s, which at times affected his performances on stage. He died unexpectedly in Paris As no autopsy was performed; the cause of Jim Morrison’s death remains unknown.
Kurt Donald Cobain was the front man of Nirvana; He is remembered as one of the most iconic and influential musicians in the history of alternative rock, an icon for Generation X.
’Smells Like Teen Spirit” off the 1991 album Nevermind stills brings back so many memories for me. I had not only left home a few years before but had moved to the other side of the world, that didn’t stop my love for new music and all things different, something or someone ahead of their time, Kurt Cobain ticked all the boxes for me.
Kurt Cobain Dead at 27
On March 1, 1994, Kurt Cobain was diagnosed with bronchitis and laryngitis, he was on tour in Germany and the next day he flew to Rome for medical treatment, he was joined there by his wife, Courtney Love a day later.
The next morning, Love awoke to find that he had overdosed on a combination of champagne and Rohypol. Cobain was immediately rushed to the hospital and was unconscious for the rest of the day. After five days in the hospital, Cobain was released and returned home to the US. Love later stated that the incident was Cobain’s first suicide attempt.
On April 5 Kurt Cobain was dead by his own hand he was 27.
Amy Jade Winehouse, singer, songwriter and “the last real individualist around”.
I was late to the Amy Winehouse fan club but once there I plan to enjoy her music for many years to come.
Amy Winehouse’s debut Album Frank was released in 2003 and was a critical success in the UK, her follow up Back To Black in 2006 led to five Grammy Awards and made her the first British woman to win five including three of the Big Four, Best New Artist – Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. (If you ever see the documentary Amy made in 2015 watch the part just after she won at the Grammys, it is very sad and demonstrates how drugs can take over everything in your life).
Most will know the song Rehab from Back to Black because of her well-documented issues but the songs Back To Black and Valerie from the same Album will give her new fans for many years to come.
Amy Winehouse Dead at 27
On 18 June 2011, Winehouse started her twelve-leg European tour, local media described her performance as a scandal and disaster, and she was booed off the stage due to her apparently being too drunk to perform. It was reported that she was unable to remember the city she was in, the lyrics of her songs or—when trying to introduce them—the names of the members of her band.
The local press also claimed that Winehouse was forced to perform by her bodyguards, who did not allow her to leave the stage when she tried to do so. She then pulled out of performances in Istanbul and Athens, which had been scheduled for the following week.
On 21 June, it was announced that she had cancelled all shows of her tour and would be given “as long as it takes” to sort herself out.
Amy Winehouse’s last public appearance took place at Camden’s Roundhouse, London on 20 July 2011, when she made a surprise appearance on stage, she would be dead on July 23 from alcohol Poisoning age 27.
